The Albanese government’s revamped bill to tackle online misinformation and disinformation has been criticised as a “complete mess” with calls for the proposal to be “thrown out the door”.

The government is set to introduce the new legislation into parliament this week which would see massive fines imposed on social media companies that fail to adequately crack down on misinformation and disinformation on their platforms.

Sky News host James Morrow claimed the proposed bill would not just see “information throttled online” but also create “two tiers of free speech” in Australia.

“I mean, the Coalition has said that they will always stand for free speech, but to the extent that they’ve done so, they’ve said well the bill has problems, but it has issues,” Mr Morrow told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“They haven’t said the whole idea of this is a complete mess and it needs to be thrown out the door. And I think that’s where we are right now.

“If you wanna see information throttled online, just pass this bill. It’s already happening, but the other thing too is it creates two tiers of free speech in this country.”
