Police maps have revealed the Melbourne suburbs most likely to be terrorised by teenage crime gangs like Apex
The operational maps show the crime hotspots around suburban Melbourne where car theft, home invasions and aggravated burglary are prevalent and commonly committed by young offenders.
Neighbourhoods near railway lines and busy main roads show up on the maps as high crime areas given it allows offenders to escape quickly and easily.
Crime hotspots appear to be in line with the Frankston, Sandringham and Cranbourne/Pakenham rail lines where groups like the notorious Apex gang are known to operate, the Herald Sun reports.
The police maps reveal areas in the city’s south-east, including Murrumbeena, Carnegie, Mordialloc, Mentone and Sandringham, are among the ones hit hard by violent crimes in the past year.
In one of many violent attacks in Melbourne’s south-east this year, two men were caught on security cameras storming an alcohol store in Clayton South armed with a machete and an axe.
The men, one of whom was African in appearance, fled with bottles of alcohol and cash.
Police say areas in Melbourne’s south-east have also experienced a series of burglaries and invasions, including the theft of car keys and luxury cars.
It comes after a founding member of the Apex gang revealed to Daily Mail Australia they have ‘guidelines’ on how to hijack luxury cars and how they target people who are flashy with their possessions.
‘The people that do it right take the cars – for the thrill – but then they make money by chopping it up and selling it,’ John, 21, said.
Members of the gang select their victims by carefully watching the behaviour of people in wealthy suburbs, keeping an eye out for anyone who is flashing large amounts of cash or throwing out expensive items like computers on the city’s junk pick up days.
Apex members are linked to a violent carjacking of a family in St Albans, in Melbourne’s north-west, earlier this month that is said to have traumatized a 12-year-old girl.
Neighbours of the family said they were known to throw out expensive items in their rubbish, which John said that behaviour wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by the gang members.
